Aresty
Mapping Center
The concept for the Conservancy's mapping center was
initiated by Jim Aresty, a former Conservancy Trustee who
saw the need for the Conservancy to start using Geographic
Information Systems, or GIS, to produce customized GIS
maps for a variety of open space applications. He
envisioned a system where the Conservancy would use
existing GIS data and tax data to develop maps that would
vividly tell the stories of our land acquisition projects
and plans. Jim and his wife Wendy made several generous
gifts to the Conservancy to establish our mapping center
and in an effort to thank them for their commitment to our
work, we have named the Aresty Mapping Center in their
honor.
Maps are
essential tools for preserving land; they show a vision of
how a community's open space works as a system - to
connect existing parks, buffer neighborhoods, protect
waterways. Since the beginning, the focus of the Aresty
Mapping Center has been to create GIS Open Space Maps for
communities as a part of the Conservancy's Partners for
Greener Communities program. As our mapping expertise
increased, we began to use GIS for additional types of
mapping, such as Greenway Maps and maps for grant
applications.
We also began offering our GIS mapping
services to local governments, non-profits and other
agencies who had specific open space mapping needs. For
example, in 2003 we assisted the Canal Society of New
Jersey with the mapping of the Morris Canal and an
associated greenway in Morris County. This project
resulted in a series of twelve maps; one for each
municipality in Morris County that the Canal traverses,
and 1 large map
illustrating the path of the Canal through
the entire county.
